Protocols and ProfilesBluetooth protocols and profiles are displayed in an easy-to-understand,high-level procedures-oriented chronological format in the Overview windows and fullydetailed to the lowest bit/byte level in the linked Details view. ClassicBluetooth, Low Energy, and HCI traffic is displayed in designated Overviews real-time,as capture progresses. The useris provided various controls to easily customize any Overview, includingpowerful filtering and coloring capabilities designed to quickly isolatespecific protocols, profiles, or communications of interest. Traffic can bepresented at the highest level of abstraction and the user can drill down toshow all intermediate levels, down to the most basic elements, such aspacket-only views. HCI Analysis [PRO]Wireless traffic is of course one of the most useful elements of debugging informationfor Bluetooth engineers, but Host Controller Interface (HCI) traffic is anequally important complement of information for getting a clear and completepicture of the situation. The HCIis an electrical interface defined by the Bluetooth specification for communicationsbetween the host controller and the radio. The Ellisys BEX400 supports captureof USB HCI, UART HCI and SPI HCI. Any and all HCI traffic is capturedconcurrently with the wireless traffic using the same precision clock forperfect synchronization and timing analysis, and is displayed in thehighly-optimized Ellisys analysis software. HCIcapture is also a very convenient feature when working with devices thatimplement Secure Simple Pairing (SSP). The Ellisys analysis software automatically extracts any Link Keyexchanged over HCI and usesit to decrypt the wireless traffic, all without any user interaction. Spectrum Analysis [PRO]The 2.4GHz ISM band used by Bluetooth is quite busy. Other users of thisband include WiFi, LTE, ZigBee, ANT and a broad range of other proprietary and commercial technologies. All of these users interfere with each other and it isoften necessary to have a better understanding of the wireless environment. The spectrum display offered by the Ellisys sniffer is the perfect tool for coexistence debugging, wireless characterization, or simply for visualizing theRF environment. It captures the spectrum signal strength (RSSI) in all Bluetooth channels with a configurableprecision of up to 1 microsecond, and displays this information insynchronization with the Bluetooth packets. Logic Analysis [PRO]The logic analysis feature enables capture of any logic signal, in synchronization withthe wireless and HCI traffic. Any digital signal is supported, including general-purpose I/Os or dedicated pins such as TX/RX Active. Another of themany applications for this feature is keeping track of a device’s powerconsumption in various states, by using dedicated hardware such as comparatorsfor determining whether key thresholds are exceeded. These signals can then be visualized with5-nanosecond precision and comparedwith the other captured streams in the powerful Instant Timing view of theEllisys software. Audio AnalysisTheEllisys analysis software includes integrated Audio analysis. Any captured audio stream can bequickly and easily played back, even live, during capture. Finding thepacket carrying a specific audio portion or seeing event and topology changesat specific audio positions becomes child’s play. With thePRO Edition, audio captured over HCI or with the Audio I2S capture can be playedback as well. This enables characterization of the complete audio chain, fromthe uncompressed audio provided to the source radio chip, to the audiotransmitted wirelessly, and the decoded audio received by the receiver radiochip. Automated and Long-Term CaptureThere are various user applications that require the use of the analyzer in an automatedfashion, often under control of user-defined software applications performing avariety of tasks. These applications may include long-term test environments, integration of the analyzer into a mobile platform, and other usage models. Thanks tothe ease-of-use and robustness provided by the Ellisys Digital Radio, the BEX400 is the perfect system for these tasks. The analyzer can be controlled with asimple yet powerful Remote Control API (ApplicationProgramming Interface) to programmatically start / stop / save captures, andextract specific captured information that can be used for various purposes,including go/no-go testing , all without any manual operation. A uniquesegmentation feature works seamlessly with the API to allow for extremely long captures,segmenting captures into smaller more manageable slices while maintainingtopology and contextual information from capture to capture.
